This list is purely opinion. There are so many video game characters that I haven't played, so this is only for the ones I've played.
10. Simon from Simon the Sorcerer
A good example of a fun and unique character that does not need to be violent. Simon has a dry sense of humor and doesn't take himself seriously. He's also very laid back and does not stress out about things. Simon isn't as smart as some other characters on this list, but he makes up for it with his determination and tenacity. Plus, he can speak cat, which is pretty cool. Simon can get a little annoying sometimes because he can be an idiot, but overall he's one of my favorite video game characters.
9. Link (Ocarina of Time)
Link's personality is a bit more complex than most video game heroes. While Link is generally kind, brave, and determined, he's also an extremely complex character. His emotions aren't always easy to read, and Link can have dark moods at times. Link also displays more anger than other video game characters. He has a temper, and he can hold a grudge. In fact, in the Legend of Zelda series, Link often becomes more determined to complete his quest after he has been betrayed by another character. The only time he ever breaks down emotionally is when he sees his close friend Saria turn into a giant monster. I think this is one of the most touching scenes in the entire Legend of Zelda series. Overall, Link's personality is probably the most unique on this list.
8. Crash Bandicoot
Crash is the type of character that you either love or hate, but no matter what your opinion is, you have to admit that Crash's personality is extremely memorable. Crash's personality is a mix of hyperactive and impulsive. He can be a little annoying because of these traits, but he's still a very fun character. Crash isn't afraid to put himself in harm's way for the greater good, which makes him a hero. Crash is also smart enough not to get into situations that could kill him, but sometimes it doesn't matter, and Crash will have to rely on his quick thinking skills to get out of those sticky situations.
7. Tails from the Sonic franchise
Tails is the youngest character on this list, which means he's still growing as a person. It's hard to tell if Tails even has a personality yet because he's so young, but there are some hints that he does. For example, he seems to have an adventurous spirit, and he is extremely loyal to Sonic. Like Crash, Tails is a hero who's not afraid to put himself in danger. But unlike most heroes, Tails' bravery doesn't seem to come from within himself. Instead, it seems like he's doing what he does because he believes it is the right thing to do, even if it could mean losing his life.
6. Ratchet (Ratchet & Clank)
This character is a great example of a video game character that can be both a hero and an antihero depending on how you interpret his actions. Ratchet is a mercenary who sells weapons to anyone willing to pay for them. He's also a criminal who has a bounty on his head. Yet he still manages to be a good guy at times. He's also very smart and knows when to use his weapon. Overall, Ratchet is a cool character who always keeps things interesting.
5. Sam Fisher (Splinter Cell franchise)
Sam Fisher is a CIA agent who specializes in covert operations. As a result, Fisher has to rely heavily on stealth and agility. He's one of the most agile characters on this list. In addition to his agility, Fisher can also jump high and take a lot of damage, which makes him a durable character as well. Fisher is a great example of a video game hero who can be both a hero and an antihero. In fact, Sam Fisher is so good at being an antihero, he actually has a mission to assassinate a politician because he believes the politician will bring about world peace. Sam Fisher is also an excellent character designer, and it shows with his facial expressions. I don't think there are many characters on this list who can express themselves like Sam Fisher can. Overall, Sam Fisher is a great character who does not need to kill or be violent to make himself interesting.
4. Kratos from God of War
Kratos is probably the angriest and most violent character on this list. He can be a real jerk sometimes. But what makes Kratos so great is that he can be such a jerk, but still be likable at the same time. Kratos is also smart enough to know when he should stop being violent. In fact, Kratos' ability to use his intelligence to avoid unnecessary violence is one of the reasons why I love his character so much. Plus, Kratos' character design is amazing. His beard and hair are so detailed and realistic, you'd almost swear he was real. Overall, Kratos is a great character who knows how to make himself interesting without having to kill anyone.
3. Link (Twilight Princess)
Link is back on this list, this time in his younger days. What's interesting about this version of Link is that he's a little bit more lighthearted than other versions of the character. Link has a sense of humor, and he likes to play around and have fun. He's also very kind, which makes him easy to like. Overall, this version of Link is a great example of a video game hero who doesn't always have to be serious.
2. Tails from Sonic Advance
Tails returns to this list, this time in his older years. It's amazing what happens to a character when their appearance changes. Tails is now an adult, which means he can do things that a young boy couldn't do. For example, he's no longer afraid of heights, which makes it easier for him to climb up tall buildings. In addition, Tails can now fly, which gives him an extra edge over enemies. Overall, I think this version of Tails is one of my favorite characters on this list because he's just as cool as the first version of the character, but he's also able to do more things.
1. Link (Twilight Princess)
This is the newest version of Link, and he's the most mature version of the character to date. Link is still a hero, but he's not as innocent as he was in other games. Instead, he's experienced and has been through some rough times. But despite all the trouble he's been through, Link still manages to keep his kind personality. He still cares about other people and tries to make sure they're okay. This version of Link is so mature and so great, he almost seems like a real person.
