You can die, but it will make your cold go away.

Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
Use a humidifier or take steamy showers to moisten the air and relieve nasal congestion.
Try over-the-counter decongestants, which shrink swollen membranes in the nose and throat. Avoid taking these products for more than three days at a time; then, wait another two days before using them again. If you are age 65 or older, check with your doctor before using any decongestant. Decongestants are not recommended if you have high blood pressure, glaucoma or heart disease.
Saline nasal sprays can help clear stuffiness and thin mucus secretions so they drain better. Use only as directed.

I've noticed that my cold doesn't like hot liquids. So I recommend drinking some tea. Or even just warm water.

Oh yea, also take over-the-counter painkillers such as acetaminophen (such as Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB) or naproxen (Aleve).

Also, you may be having problems sleeping. I've found that rubbing a Vicks Vapor Rub on my chest helps me fall asleep. It's one of the few things to help me fall asleep when I have a cold.
