Neanderthals lived in Europe and Asia (not including India) and they died off somewhere between 28,000 and 24,000 years ago. They are believed to be our ancestors or at least part of our ancestry. It's said that Homo sapiens and Neanderthals had some sort of interbreeding because about 1% to 4% of the DNA of Europeans is Neanderthal DNA and about .2% of the DNA of East Asians is Neanderthal DNA.

Also, just because we're all technically the same species doesn't mean we can't have different tribes. For example, there used to be Native American tribes like the Sioux tribe. Also, we're technically not even the same species as modern humans. Modern humans are Homo sapiens. We are a sub-species called Homo sapiens sapiens.
