As I am sure you all know, God gave Moses a set of commandments to give to his people in order to show them what was good and bad. However, most people do not understand that these are not just laws, but they also show us our destiny. If we break one or more of these commandments, then we will never see heaven.
Moses was told by God to go down to Egypt and speak with the Pharaoh to get his people out of slavery. He had to take along his wife and son, as well as his brother Aaron. They did this for three days, and on the third day the Lord appeared to Moses in flames of fire from within a burning bush, and he had to remove his sandals because the ground was holy. He spoke with Moses and told him that he should tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go, but if he refused, then God would bring upon them plagues. Moses said that the people would not listen to him if God did not appear before them. The Lord told Moses to approach the Egyptian king and tell him that the Lord said to let the Israelites go so that they could worship their God in the desert.
Now, there is more than just one type of Israelite. The true Israelites are the ones who were born into it (from Abraham through David). However, the Israelites that we commonly refer to today are those who came from Joseph through the time of Moses. These false Israelites are what made up the 12 tribes of Israel, and they are all under the same law. All 12 tribes are counted as being a part of the nation of Israel, but only the 10 tribes of Israel (the Northern Tribes) are considered to be the false Israelites. The Southern Tribes (Judah, Benjamin, and Levi) are the true Israelites, and they will have no part in the punishments. We will now continue with the story.
God appeared again to Moses on Mount Sinai in order to give him the laws by which God's people must abide by in order to gain eternal life. If you want to know what these commandments are, then I suggest reading Exodus 20-23.
These are the 10 Commandments:
1. You shall have no other Gods before me.
2. You shall not make graven images or any likeness of anything in heaven above nor earth beneath.
3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
5. Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long upon the land that the Lord has given you.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.
Now, we already know that if you break one of these commandments, you will go to hell. But, there is more than just breaking the commandments. If you do something bad for a reason, then it will be recorded as good, but if you do something good for a bad reason, then it will be recorded as evil. For example, let's say that you give somebody a gift because you love them, and they tell you thank you. It would be recorded as good even though you did it for a good reason. Now, let's say that you give somebody a gift because you think that they like you and they give you no thanks, then it is recorded as evil. The same thing goes with bad reasons for good deeds and vice versa. So, now that we have covered everything about the 10 Commandments, I am sure you understand what I meant when I said that these are not just laws, but also show us our destiny.
The 12 Tribes of Israel were divided by the Lord into two groups. One group was called the Kingdom of Judah, and they were made up of the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi (the Southern Tribes). They were given the land of Canaan. The other group was known as the Kingdom of Israel, and they were made up of the Northern Tribes. They were to live in the wilderness for 40 years after being led out of Egypt, and they were then to move back to their homeland of Assyria and stay there until they were ready to take over Babylon.
Now, the true Israelites will still have to go through the judgment of God, but only in order to be purified from sin, whereas the false Israelites will face eternal damnation.
The Kingdom of Judah was taken away from the Israelites in 700BC because they worshiped other Gods in addition to the Lord. God gave them 70 more years before he would destroy them, but they had no interest in repenting. That was all that he would give them.
In the year 605BC, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, took control of the Kingdom of Judah and carried its people off into exile. Those who remained in Judah were killed by Nebuchadnezzar's troops when Nebuchadnezzar was defeated by Cyaxares.
However, the Israelites that were captured by Nebuchadnezzar did not have it so bad, because they were able to continue on with their faith in the Lord even though they were in exile. However, when Cyrus the Persian conquered Babylon, he allowed the exiled Israelites to return to Jerusalem in 538BC. He also let the Levites and priests take back all of the silverware and goldware that Nebuchadnezzar had taken from Solomon's Temple and brought back to Babylon. But, these Israelites did not return to Jerusalem right away. It took a while for them to organize themselves and find enough money to build a temple in Jerusalem again.
Now, we must focus our attention on the Northern Tribes (the false Israelites) and see what became of them.
Nebuchadnezzar made Assyria a vassal state, so when he died, his son took over and the kingdom became a mess. There was much fighting between the Assyrians and the Egyptians, but the Assyrians eventually won.
In the year 610BC, the Medes and Persians defeated the Assyrians and took over Assyria and Babylonia. When the Persian King Cyrus conquered Babylon, the Northern Tribes were freed from captivity, but they went back to their homeland instead of returning to Jerusalem with the Southern Tribes.
There is one more thing that you should know about the true Israelites and false Israelites.
The true Israelites are the ones who have the promise of eternal life given to them by God. They are descendants from Abraham through David, and they will all go to heaven. However, the false Israelites are only descendants of Joseph, and they are the ones who will be punished by God because they broke one or more of the commandments that God gave them. So, even though the true Israelites are guilty of breaking the law, they still get to go to heaven because of their ancestry.
