i was a poor child
my father sold me to a man
who beat me every day
then when I turned 20, I ran away
but I could never forget it
my mother was crying
when she told me goodbye
I promised her that I'd be back one day and make her proud
I grew up in the gutter
eating garbage every day
I learned to steal as a kid
now it's my job, yeah
I didn't have nobody
no one to call my own
so I hit the road
and got on my own
Then one day I looked around
and saw I had some friends
we took out a loan, made our plan
we started up a band
I remember that first show
I'll always be amazed
the people came in droves
they all wanted a taste
Now I'm not saying I'm a saint
or that I'm better than you
but if you want something done
you just gotta do it yourself
I don't need your charity
I just need a little respect
because I know what I want
I've been looking for it since I was 10 years old
So now I look at my life
and realize it's worth living
I'm gonna keep on fighting
till I get it right
because when I think of home
I can't forget those days
when my mother cried
she told me goodbye
I remember that first show
I'll always be amazed
the people came in droves
they all wanted a taste
I remember that first show
I'll always be amazed
the people came in droves
they all wanted a taste
