I am trying to figure out what kind of immigrant my great grandfather was.
So I found this family tree site that has a section where you can find out details about your ancestors. So far, it's been very helpful because I was able to trace my ancestry back to the 1500s in Spain.
However, there is one ancestor who I don't know much about. My great great great grandfather was born in 1873 in Italy, and he was listed on his death certificate as an Italian immigrant.
What I want to do is find out his parents, so I can use the birth records of Italy to find out more information about them. But here is the problem: The last name of his children (my great grandmother, my great grandfather and their siblings) was not the same as his. His children were all named after him, but they had different surnames.
Why would this be?
Did he change his name when he immigrated to the United States? Or did he take a new surname?
If you need anymore information, please let me know. I'm trying to find out more about my family, and it's extremely difficult. Thanks for helping!
