Tigers
The tiger (Panthera tigris) is the largest extant cat species and a member of the Pantherinae family. The tiger is most recognisable by its striped fur, and is found throughout Asian countries. It is the third largest carnivore on Earth, after the polar bear and the brown bear, and is the largest felid in the world. Tigers are apex predators, being at the top of the food chain. Adult tigers exhibit sexual dimorphism; they have a robust body structure with a large head and powerful limbs. The tiger is the largest of the four big cats in the genus Panthera and ranges from 240 to 360 cm in length. They weigh between 180 and 300 kg.
Although they have no major natural enemies, their populations are threatened by poaching and habitat destruction, making them an endangered species. They are classified as a national treasure of China and India. [1][2]
The species has been listed as endangered in the IUCN Red List since 1994. As of 2015, the global wild tiger population is estimated at around 3,159 individuals. As of July 2016, there were fewer than 2,000 tigers living in the wild worldwide, having lost 95% of their historic range.
