It's also the name of a famous book (The 13th Hour).

13 is bad luck, because 13 x 1 is equal to 13, and 13 backwards is 31. 3 and 1 are prime numbers. 31 is a prime number. Therefore 13 is unlucky.
Also 1 x 1 is equal to 1
1 x 2 is equal to 2
2 x 2 is equal to 4
4 x 3 is equal to 12
12 x 2 is equal to 24
24 x 1 is equal to 24
1+2+2+4+12+24 = 45
45 x 2 is equal to 90
90 x 3 is equal to 270
270 x 9 is equal to 2430
2430 x 1 is equal to 2430
2430 divided by 10 is 243, making 243 the devil's number.
So basically 13 is unlucky because it's just really bad luck overall.
