no, no. you're right. people shouldn't be jerks to you.
it's just that the word "nice" has a lot of connotations associated with it. we've been conditioned to think that a nice person is someone who only does positive things and doesn't stand up for themselves or say anything bad about other people.
therefore, you may be getting a negative reaction from some people because they perceive you as weak or inferior.
the best way to combat that is to tell them off if they act like an ass. if you're polite enough to do that, you'll quickly earn respect.
