People think that just because I'm autistic, that I'm mentally handicapped. They don't know what they're talking about.

People are like: "Oh he's autistic! He must be mentally handicapped!" I don't know how to make them understand.

Zar, I have seen you post on your other account and you're a smart guy. Why do you not understand this?

What is it that makes you think I am not intelligent? I would guess the fact that we disagree on everything.

That's not what I meant. I was saying that when I've seen you on your main account, you're a very intelligent person and I have no idea why you don't understand this.

I believe they are the same thing, so why don't I understand? You haven't given me any reason to change my opinion on that subject. You have failed to make me see your point of view, so you must not be correct.

Just because someone has autism doesn't mean they can't be smart.

So? So is the fact that some people with mental retardation are also smart.

Not all people with autism are mentally handicapped. Some are as smart as you or even smarter than you.

And not everyone who is mentally retarded is stupid, either

If you had read my post, you would have noticed this: "So is the fact that some people with mental retardation are also smart."

Also, I am pretty sure I said that a lot of people who are mentally retarded are also smart, which is why I think that your argument is invalid.

Zar, you don't understand. You're using stereotypes. Let's say this was an extreme case, and there was someone who had autism who was actually mentally retarded. Are you saying that just because that person was mentally retarded, you think they were autistic? Or do you mean that since they were mentally retarded, it's okay if they're autistic?

I am not using stereotypes. Stereotypes are generalizations about a group. I have not generalized people with autism or people with mental retardation. I have simply said that some people who are one of those two things are smart, so it isn't correct to say that all people who are one of those two things are not intelligent.

Well, it doesn't matter what you meant, the way people use "autistic" and "mentally retarded" is basically the same thing. And you shouldn't be generalizing autism, either. Because it is true that a lot of people who are diagnosed as "autistic" aren't actually mentally handicapped

I have an autism spectrum disorder but I don't see how that makes me stupid.

But anyway, Zar, it's still the fact that people don't understand autism because they think it's the same thing as mental retardation

I am sorry if you took offense to anything I said. I was trying to make a point that we disagree on everything because of our different opinions.

Also, I do not see how a person could be diagnosed with something that isn't correct.

Zar, let me clarify some things for you. You didn't offend me, so please stop being sorry, okay? :) The doctors and psychologists are the ones who make these diagnoses. But in reality, not all of them are actually autistic, or mentally retarded. They may have one of those disorders, but their brain functions normally. It doesn't mean that just because someone is diagnosed as autistic that they're mentally handicapped.

So there are two types of people who have autism? People who are mentally handicapped, and people whose brains function normally?

But aren't the two types of people with autism the same thing? If there are two types of people with autism, wouldn't the two types be the same thing if one type was diagnosed as autistic and the other wasn't?

I know, it's confusing, but I'm talking about the fact that doctors say so-and-so has "autism" I'm saying that not all people who have autism are actually autistic

Okay. But what is the difference between people who are diagnosed as autistic and people who aren't? Do they have different characteristics or something? I mean, you said that you were autistic and that doesn't make you mentally handicapped. Why can't the doctors diagnose some people as being autistic when those people don't have mental disabilities?
