The 5th grade is the second last year of elementary school, and fifth-graders are usually aged ten or eleven.
The curriculum is more advanced than that of the 3rd and 4th grades, and teachers expect students to be more responsible. Students are taught basic algebraic concepts, such as equations and variables. They also learn about the American Revolution and World War II.
Fifth graders take several tests in the first half of the year. These include standardized tests in language arts and math, along with tests on topics like geography and history.
In the latter part of the year, they might start taking standardized tests for state assessment programs or national tests.
The curriculum in most schools consists of:
* English/Language Arts
* Math
* Science
* Social Studies (U.S. History and Geography)
* Technology
* Physical Education
* Music
* Art
* Foreign Language
