I've always heard this phrase or something similar in response to people asking why certain individuals have a better life than others, and I've never really understood it. I've also heard the "at least they have a roof over their head" comment. I just don't get either of these phrases. To me, it seems that there is no such thing as deserving a better life than someone else, so what is the point? And even if we are talking about the circumstances you were born into, then isn't being born a crap circumstance to begin with? I mean, seriously, what could possibly be worse than being born? It's like telling me that I deserve whatever happens to me because of the circumstances I was born into, when none of us had any control over those things.
