1D was actually big when I lived down south (USA) but it's still popular up here even though I don't know anyone who listens to them.

I'm pretty sure there is no law against saying 1D sucks. If anything you're free to say whatever you want as long as you don't hurt or threaten anyone else. So basically, yes you could get away with it here in Canada.
