It's a platformer, it has many different levels and challenges. It is also the most addicting game I've ever played. But, what makes it even better is that you can customize your character.
It was first released on the NES in 1992, but was later remade for other consoles (like the Sega Genesis and Gameboy). So you're probably wondering, what the heck is this game? Well, it's called Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sonic was created by Japanese game developer named SEGA. At the time, they were making games for arcade machines. But then they decided to take a risk and start developing for home gaming consoles (NES) and handheld systems (Game Boy).
Their first game was called "Alex Kidd", which was an action-adventure game. After this, SEGA tried to make another game, but with a different style. They wanted their next game to be an "on-rails" shooter, where the player controls a vehicle along a set path.
This new game was called "Space Harrier". It was based on science fiction, and featured flying robots and UFOs. This game wasn't as popular as Alex Kidd, so SEGA tried making a different type of game. This one would be more of an exploration game. The developers decided to name it "Sonic the Hedgehog".
The first Sonic game was about Sonic racing through a forest level and collecting rings. When he collects 100 rings, he is granted a special power-up that allows him to fly through the air. Eventually, after collecting enough rings, he is able to get into an area called the Special Stage. Here, you can race against a computer player to see who can collect the most rings in the shortest amount of time.
This game was a major success for SEGA. So much so, that they made many different versions of the game over the years. Some of these include: Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Lost World.
The game has since been remade many times over the years. There are also several spin-off games like Sonic Battle and Sonic Riders. These are all great games that any gamer should try out. But none compare to the original.

@Iam
I agree with you. The only problem I have with Sonic is the fact that his series has gotten ruined by all these "meh" games SEGA is putting out nowadays.

Yeah, same here. It's really hard for me to beat the Special Stages in the first Sonic game.

@Iam
Then again, I've never finished a Mario game either. So I'm probably not that great of a gamer in general.
