I've never done that but I have made an entire story off of an online game I played back in the day.
The game was called 'Super Bomb Survival'.
It's a 2D, side-scrolling, top-down shooter game. The only thing I really did with it though was I created a map and made up some new weapons for the game to have.
Then I wrote a story about someone who had this map and these guns and how he fought against the enemies in this place. The only reason I made the guns is because the original guns didn't really do anything other than fire bullets or fireballs.
