unless you mean they only remember what happened when you were alive, which also doesn't explain it

You never stop existing. Just because your body stops living doesn't mean you stop existing. Your memories continue on in other people's minds.

Your brain does not die. That is why you can still see things. All your memories are inside your brain and it will be there for the rest of time unless you get a brain cancer.
