The last game I actually enjoyed was Halo, which is 8 years old. The best games I've played recently are CoD and Battlefield, both of which are terrible.
I'm probably going to buy Fallout 4, but it's still not guaranteed that it'll be any good.

Try the Binding of Isaac. It's got good gameplay and a fun story behind it.
Also try Fallout: New Vegas if you liked Fallout 3.

The Binding of Isaac is amazing. The DLCs are great too, I recommend The Wrath of the Lamb.
