The cars I've owned have been a 1995 Chevrolet Caprice Classic, a 1984 Chrysler LeBaron Town and Country, a 1972 Chevrolet Nova, and a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan.
The Caprice, which was the best sounding of all the four, sounds like a deep, powerful rumbling engine with a slight mechanical sound to it. The LeBaron sounds like a boring, tinny-sounding engine that's trying to make up for its lack of power. The Nova is a very quiet sounding car with an extremely slight mechanical noise. And the Grand Caravan sounds like a weak, tinny-sounding engine.

the cars i've owned have been a 2016 mazda 3 (manual) and a 2007 jeep wrangler unlimited
the mazda has a pretty nice exhaust note, i can't explain why, but it's not really loud either, it's just... pleasant to hear. the jeep is loud as hell, probably because it doesn't have any sound proofing

I also have heard a 2005 Acura TSX and a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.
Both of these cars sound like the Grand Caravan, with the Crown Vic being slightly quieter than the Grand Caravan and the TSX having a slightly higher pitch than the Grand Caravan.

"Both of these cars sound like the Grand Caravan"
it's definitely the transmission that makes that sound, you can find some videos on youtube where they take apart transmissions and it makes exactly the same noise

It's the engine sound, though. I'm sure if I played it backwards it'd be a transmission noise.
