It's called "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and it was made in 1951
The plot: Alien race wants humans to stop using nuclear weapons. In order to prove their point, they land their spaceship in New York with an alien named Klaatu (who has a human body) inside.
Then Klaatu goes into a building and then there is some sort of accident. (I don't want to spoil too much)
The effects were really good for the time, but I couldn't help but notice that they actually made the city look like New York.
That was all I could do before I had to go.
