It's a 3D printed robotic arm that is made to be controlled via an app on your phone, and it's made so you can do simple actions like grab things, shake someone's hand, and even give someone a high five. Sounds awesome right? Well, not really. The creator of the new friend, is a company called Anki. They already make virtual pets in the form of little robots, but they are meant to be companions, and are not meant to do anything more than make cute sounds. So why would they want to create a robot that will act like a human? Well, there are many reasons to, but let me tell you why they SHOULD NOT MAKE THIS ROBOT: 1) It doesn't work, and will never work as well as the human hand. This may not be obvious, but when humans use their hands, there are a lot of small movements involved that allow us to perform certain tasks with ease, but this robotic hand may not have enough precision to do them. For example, if I wanted to eat spaghetti, it would be hard for the robot to pick up a piece without breaking it. 2) It's expensive. These things cost about $99 for the basic model, and $199 for the "deluxe" model. Now you're probably thinking "wow, that's not too expensive." But what if you don't want to buy it? What if you want to test it out first before buying it? Well, you can get 14 days trial version which only allows you to use the app for 14 days. So if you really want one, it costs around $80 extra. That's not cheap. 3) They say it works in the dark...but does it REALLY work? This is something I'm skeptical about, because as we all know, robots need electricity to run. But how would they make the arm move without electricity? What if they made the arm wireless? If so, then I could just go and buy a robot arm off eBay or Amazon, put my phone next to it and pretend that it was the invisible friend. It wouldn't look as good, but at least I won't have to pay $99 for it. 4) It's creepy. Sure, there are people who think this would be cool, but it's still creepy. Think about it: A giant robotic arm floating around your house with no purpose other than to shake hands or high five someone. Wouldn't you feel like you were being watched by an alien or something? Also, what if the robot accidentally hurts someone? Or worse, what if it falls down and breaks? It would probably cost A LOT to get it fixed. 5) It's not really that useful. As I said before, it can't do anything that a human hand can do. So why would you want one of these things? So yeah, I think that's pretty much it. There are probably more reasons not to buy one of these things, but those are the main ones. Thanks for reading guys!
