I have a friend who has been feeling very depressed lately. I don't know why, and he won't tell me.
The only thing I've heard him say that's related to this is that he was "tired of being the smart kid" and he wanted to be normal.
What should I do?

Yup. It's just the way it goes. Just tell him to snap out of it and remind him how good he has it, but that won't help much. Just let him be and see if he comes out of it. That's all you can do. There is no way to help him otherwise.

If he is depressed enough to think suicide is a possibility then he isn't going to listen to you telling him not to do it. There isn't anything you can do. You can't change someone's mind, especially if they have severe depression.

Well, if he is that depressed and he tells you he has suicidal thoughts, I would suggest calling the police so they can send an emergency crew to his house to see if he needs immediate medical attention.

I wouldn't call the police because it would be very embarrassing for both of us.
Plus, if I tell them that my friend might want to commit suicide, they might lock him up.

If he has been talking about killing himself and you don't get him help, then you are just as much as guilty as he is if something were to happen to him. So if anything were to go wrong it's your fault, not his.
