It's literally just a way for people to say they have autism, but don't want to be labeled as autistic.
I'm not on the autism spectrum, but I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when I was 7 years old.
So... why does it even exist?

I think some people may say that they are on the spectrum because it sounds more 'sophisticated' than saying they have ASD. And they can't be accused of being autistic because their condition isn't as severe as an actual autistic person.
I have autism and I have ADHD, so I am diagnosed with both.

It's a term used by neurotypical people who want to use the autism label to seem more hip and edgy or whatever it is they think makes them appear better than other people

Yeah, I know what you mean. People who claim to be "on the autism spectrum" often have a very high IQ.
