Newb is a little old. I think newb was invented when roblox came out and noob is an inside joke because we have nothing better to do. :D

It's the same thing as the "mudkipz r cool" thing. It started with some random guy saying it in 06. Then he got popular, so everyone copied him. Then everyone else wanted to be popular so they said it too. And now it's stuck.

Noob is basically an insult. The original meaning was someone who was new and couldn't do anything good, but I've found out it has taken on another meaning.
