They're actually going to stop using the term "the" for sports teams now. For example, the Philadelphia 76ers will now be referred to as simply the 76ers, because there's absolutely no reason why that term should exist and it's just a waste of space.

and I didn't realize it was going to be an issue until you pointed that out
I guess it could be a good thing though
because then I'd be like "oh the 49ers lost today" instead of saying "oh the niners lost today"
which would be confusing for someone like me
who doesn't know the difference between 49ers and niners

Because they can. This has been in the works for a while now and there really isn't any valid reason why "the" should be used when referring to teams.
