The guy in the corner
There is this one guy in my class. I can't really describe him but he looks like a hipster. He also has a very big nose and black hair. Whenever we do any activities in class, he always stands in the corner by himself. He doesn't ever talk to anyone or play with anyone and he never joins anything that happens. Sometimes he just stares out the window and other times he reads a book. It's really weird because I've never seen him smile before. When everyone else is laughing and having fun he just stays there looking sad. He never goes on the playground during recess and he never gets picked for anything.
One day I decided to ask him why he did not join in. He looked at me and said "I have nothing in common with any of you" I asked him if he wanted to be my friend and he said "You are no different than the others".
A few days later, the teacher was showing us how to make something in art and she asked if anyone had an idea for what they should make. The guy in the corner raised his hand and said "I want to draw a picture of a lonely boy standing alone in the corner". We all laughed and made fun of him saying "Are you talking about yourself?". He didn't say anything back but he did stare at me the whole time. Afterwards, I walked up to him and apologized for laughing at him and he said "That's ok. You guys don't understand".
Then after school one day I saw him playing outside by himself again so I walked up to him and tried talking to him. He told me he was fine and that he didn't need anyone. So I asked him why he always stayed by himself. He told me he was just waiting for someone to play with.
I asked him what kind of people he likes to hang out with. He said he doesn't really like anyone in this school because they were all mean to him. So I asked him if he liked animals and he said yes. That made me feel happy because I also like animals! So we talked about our favorite animals and found out we both loved dogs. Then I told him my favorite dog breed is a husky and he said his favorite was a lab. So then I asked him if he wanted to be friends and he said yes!
After that we went to the store together and got some supplies to make a dog house for our new puppy. We built it together and then put a bed in there too. The next day he brought the puppy to school with him and he sat down next to me. Everyone was shocked and surprised that he actually brought a pet to school. They all started making fun of him saying things like "Look at that ugly dog". But when they saw how cute the puppy was, they stopped and asked if they could pet the puppy. He let them pet it and everyone seemed to be having fun.
That night after school he came over to my house and we played outside until it got dark. Then we ate dinner and watched TV together. It was really nice talking to him and getting to know more about him. He seems like such a cool guy now! He told me he wished more people would be nice to him so he didn't feel lonely. I told him I would try harder to be nice to everyone from now on.
So this morning I woke up and looked out the window to see what the weather was like and guess who was sitting outside by himself? That's right, the guy in the corner. So I walked outside and said hello. He didn't say anything back but he did smile at me. Then I asked him why he was still sitting out there by himself even though it was raining. He said he didn't want anyone to come over because they might make fun of him for being wet.
I told him I wouldn't make fun of him and he should come inside because I have some hot chocolate for us both. He smiled and followed me inside. We sat down at the table and drank our hot chocolate while watching the raindrops fall from the sky. After we finished eating, I showed him how to work my computer and we played games together until it got late.
Now whenever I see him standing alone in the corner I always walk over and talk to him. He doesn't say much but he does seem happier than before. I think I helped him find a friend after all.
