They are "depressing" because someone told them about suicide or some other tragedy.
It's like they believe that they will actually die or get depressed from the story itself.
I think it's hilarious.

the people who kill themselves usually have mental problems anyways
they aren't going to get better by hearing stories about people killing themselves, which is what usually happens
