the universe is full of dark energy and space will eventually expand infinitely, meaning that everything in it will become more and more distant from eachother until the entire universe is one massive void with no matter or light or heat
we are stuck in a point in time where all the galaxies have just barely escaped the gravitational collapse that would have caused them to merge into one, which means if you were to travel even an extremely small distance, you could find yourself in a pocket of space where the galaxies are closer together
eventually, they will pull together again and the whole universe will be one gigantic galaxy
but for now, we can go on living our lives as though nothing were wrong, but this state of bliss won't last forever

if you don't want to think about it like this, then here's another way of looking at it:
space is expanding, meaning that if you stand in one spot, then you'll never notice anything changing unless you move
but, if you were to move a very, very small distance, then you would begin to notice how fast the universe is expanding, so much so that if you kept moving, eventually you'd start to notice that you are moving away from the rest of the universe at a rate greater than the speed of light, and that everything you see would begin to fade until there would be no universe left to observe
