I've heard a lot of people say that they don't like anime because "it's dumb" or "the characters are so weird". What does the average person think about anime?

I'm not trying to start a flame war, I'm just curious. People say "anime is stupid and weird" but then they watch something like Steven Universe or Adventure Time or anything else and it's the same thing just in an American cartoon style.

I just want to know why some people don't like anime and others do. Anime has been around for so long and has a big fan base and I'd just like to know what people think about it. Is it only because they haven't seen much of it?

What exactly do you mean by that? What's so different about anime? It's the same thing as cartoons but with different art styles and ideas.
