Because they made a new one, of course. The reason I'm saying this is because everyone hated on Episode 1 because it was a new one.
I mean, don't get me wrong, it wasn't as good as 4-6 and the original trilogy, but it was a fun movie. The prequels were so different from the originals that some people didn't like them. If you compare Episode 1 to the originals, you can tell it's not as good. But if you compare it to Phantom Menace, you can see that there are way more similarities than dissimilarities.
All this just means is that the fans aren't really open to any new changes in Star Wars movies, so when something new comes out, they automatically say "it sucks" or "it isn't canon".
Just look at Episode 7. Everyone is excited about it because its the original trilogy again.
It's true, though. Star Wars will never be the same as it was in 1977 again.
