I am writing a short story for my English class. It's about the destruction of a planet (the Earth, obviously) in the future due to an increase in global warming. It's meant to be dark and grim and depressing.
The protagonist wakes up on a beach where there used to be an ocean; he looks out into space and sees that there are no stars, the sun has died and the world is dead. He sees a large, metal wall in front of him with another man on the other side. They're the only two survivors.
I'm struggling to come up with something to make this scene more intriguing. Any ideas?

@Puggle
Well yes sort of but the character I'm writing about is completely made up.
I am just looking for some interesting things to add to the scene.
I guess I should add something to make the other person more interesting. Like maybe say that they saw a UFO or something before they died.
