They're actually just touch screens that look like screens. They're made so that the touch screen can be used without the use of an on screen keyboard.

but why would they make such a useless thing?
there's no reason to use it, there's already a front camera and microphone for selfies/video calls.
they could have made it a bigger screen to watch videos or something else, but instead it's literally just a screen for taking selfies

I don't know I'm not a Nintendo fanboy. I own a 2DS, Wii, Gamecube, Gameboy advance and DSi, along with several other game consoles.

it's not even a full 3d screen
it's a 3d effect that makes the text look 3d, and games that support 3ds also support 3ds xl.
so, what's the point? the only benefit is if you're playing a game where it's necessary to turn your head sideways (and the new 3ds has a gyro sensor so it will tell when you've turned your head).

the problem is, there's a lot of people who buy a new console just because it looks better than the old one.
I can guarantee most people who buy a new 3ds will do this, especially since they don't realize the lack of benefits it brings over the previous model

if it were $10 more I wouldn't mind it. I just find it annoying that it's $40 more for something that doesn't even bring any benefit. it just looks better (which is why some people buy it) and some games are compatible with both models which is pretty nice but still not worth the price increase.

I'm not a fanboy, I just own Nintendo consoles because they're cheap. The Wii and Gamecube have hundreds of games on them and the 2DS has an amazing library of games as well. However, my favorite console is the Xbox 360.
