I have a new computer but it has an old 802.11b/g/n wifi adapter so I decided to buy a new one.
It turns out that my router is 802.11b/g only so my internet was actually running at 54mbps (the maximum for 802.11b/g) and not the 300 mbps promised.
I bought a new router with a 802.11ac wifi adapter.
My internet speed is now 1000x better.

That means that your wifi is slow, not your connection.
If you can afford to pay more for a faster internet connection, get one instead of buying a new laptop with a faster wifi adapter if you want faster internet

The router is the only thing that is slow, I was using an old 802.11b/g/n wifi adapter on the computer which was running at 54mbps even though the computer is capable of running at 300mbps, all I had to do was buy a new router with a 802.11ac wifi adapter so it could run at its full capacity.

It is compatible with something better.
If you were able to afford a 500mbps internet connection you'd be complaining about how slow it is if you continued to use an old 54mbps wifi adapter on it.
