You go upstairs, and find a large room with a balcony and some chairs and tables. There are no windows here, so you can't get outside. You also find two doors in the corner. One is locked. The other one is unlocked.
A) Open unlocked door.
B) Try to open locked door.
C) Go back down.

You open the unlocked door, and enter a large room. There are many paintings on the walls, along with several pieces of furniture. In the middle of the room there is a large table with some books, papers, and a cup of tea on top of it. Next to the table there is a chair that seems empty.
A) Search the room for anything interesting or useful.
B) Sit in the empty chair.

You search the room for anything interesting or useful. You find nothing except for a small key on one of the paintings on the wall. You also notice a trapdoor next to the chair you were about to sit in. You can try opening it, but you don't know where it leads to.
A) Open the trap door.
B) Look around the house more.
C) Go back downstairs.

You open the trap door, and notice a flight of stairs leading down into darkness. It seems like a good idea to bring some light with you, so you decide to go back downstairs and get a torch.
A) Get a torch.
B) Go down into the unknown.

You get a torch from downstairs, and go back up. You use the torch to light your way, as the stairs are extremely dark. As you descend down the stairs, you hear noises from the basement. They sound like...
A) Screaming.
B) Crying.
C) Laughing.

As you descend further into the basement, you see a young girl crying in the corner. She is about ten years old, and is dressed in an old-fashioned white dress. You can't tell if she's crying because she's scared or sad, but you decide to comfort her.
A) Sit next to the girl and try to console her.
B) Ignore her and continue exploring the basement.
C) Go back upstairs.

The girl hears this, and starts to cry even harder than before. She says that she doesn't want to die, and that she wants her mother. You decide to go and find out who the man is.
