The 3DS has this thing called the "sleep button" which is a big pain in the butt. You can't use it to put your system into sleep mode, you can only use it to shut down the 3DS.

It really is, you can't do anything while the screen is off, so if you're playing an RPG like Pokemon X and Y for example, when the 3DS goes into sleep mode you lose your party because all Pokemon faint.
