3D printing is a process that creates a physical model of any three-dimensional design. It is used in various fields such as engineering, manufacturing, entertainment and even art.
The term 3D printing often refers to processes using additive manufacturing which is a family of fabrication methods where components are created by the layering of materials. In contrast to conventional material removal (subtraction) processes like milling or drilling, in these methods parts are built by adding material layer by layer until the component is finished.[1]
A 3D printer is a device that makes things by building them up, one thin layer at a time. A 3D printer works using digital blueprints called .STL files. These files are used by the printer to create the object you want to make.
A 3D printer builds up a part by depositing layers of material. This means it can create objects with very complex geometries that are impossible to create using traditional methods. Because of this 3D printing allows for many more possibilities than before.
Many different types of materials are used in 3D printing but the most common type of 3D printer uses a plastic called ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene). This plastic comes out of the printer in the form of a liquid. After the plastic has been squirted out of the nozzle it solidifies and hardens over time. When the 3D printer runs out of plastic, the machine will stop working.
The printer reads data from the .stl file. The .stl file contains a mathematical description of your design. This description can be read by the printer because it is written in a computer readable format. This data tells the printer what it should print next. The printer then uses the data to tell the computer where to squirt the plastic so that your design takes shape. This happens again and again until the whole object is built.
