Also, if you look up on wikipedia, you'll see a list of all the doctors. The 9th doctor is listed as "Doctor Who" because he had no name when he regenerated. And the 8th doctor is listed as "Doctor Who", because the doctor lost his memories after regeneration, so technically there wasn't any 8th doctor, and there was never an 8th doctor for the time the 8th doctor appeared, although it was the 8th regeneration.
