There's this little thing called 'The Boston Marathon' and it's held on April 20th. Last year, the day was filled with celebration as a group of students decided to celebrate in the streets. It was peaceful... until some guy named 'Dzhokhar Tsarnaev' decided to blow up a marathon.
Then, after he did that, he and his brother decided to start shooting people. The city was in complete chaos for days and several people were killed or injured. People couldn't even drive down the street because there was so much police. That's why we have a day off.

it was also the first time the race was cancelled due to an incident
i wouldn't say that the city was completely shut down though
there was just a lot more police than usual

I saw footage of the police shooting him.
And yeah, it was all over the news. The Boston Marathon is like our 2nd biggest annual event after the Super Bowl.
