"Meme" comes from "memetics," a term coined by Richard Dawkins to describe how ideas (or concepts) are propagated and evolve. He wrote about this concept extensively in his book, "The Selfish Gene."
If you have to say what a meme is in the literal sense, I suppose you could call it an idea or a concept.
I personally think the word sounds like a dumb word, but then again, so do a lot of words.
