Because that's how life works.
People don't hand out free things to people because they want to be generous, or because they like the guy/girl.
People do it for a reason, usually a good one.

You have no way of knowing if they're going to be grateful, because they're already grateful.
This is why people don't give things away for free.

I didn't say this was wrong.
I said people shouldn't do it because they can't know if the recipient is grateful or not.
And it's a stupid thing anyway, who wants a gift from someone you know is going to be a pain?
