the brand name is actually "Coca-Cola" but when you say it fast, it sounds like "Coke". same goes for "Pepsi-Cola" (that's the brand name, not Pepsi)
and the reason why Coke and other soft drinks are called cola is because it's a shortened version of "cola", which means something like "cold drink"
also, this is probably one of the rare times that a thread here gets an actual reason behind this thing
