Why is it that people can say "I love you" and everyone is fine with it, but if you say "I like you" it's seen as weird?

There isn't really a clear standard time that is appropriate to start saying it. Some people might think it's weird no matter what, because of their age group or personal preferences.

Because one says "I like you" to express attraction whereas the other says "I love you" to express emotion.
