Mostly it's because they want something to be true and believe in it, despite the fact that they know it isn't.
their hope for something to be true. They'll even go to an extent to convince themselves that what they're seeing is real. I mean, people will believe in the flat earth conspiracy just to feel special, even though they know it's fake.
