when it's all just a big network of computers that are all connected to each other
why would it be called "the internet" when it is not internet related at all

Because, in the very beginning, when there were no websites, it was just a series of interconnected computer networks.
And the internet is essentially a giant interlinked network of computers.

but that doesn't make sense either
if you look at it literally it means "net work" which isn't even close to being accurate
it's really just "the net"

No, I guess it's not accurate.
But, "the internet" and "interconnected networks of computers" are synonymous terms. It's just easier to say "the internet" than say "interconnected networks of computers", so people just say "the internet".
