Captain Crunch™ is a breakfast cereal manufactured and marketed by General Mills. It was created by John A. Rathmann and William E. Thilly in 1961 for the Quaker Oats Company. The name and the toy inside are registered trademarks of General Mills.
It consists of oat-based rings with a sweetened outer layer and a sugar coating that creates a crunchy texture similar to granola.[2] The cereal was initially sold without any sugar coating; however, due to consumer complaints, General Mills added the coating later on. The original recipe had no added sugars, and instead relied on brown sugar syrup produced during the cooking process. The original version is still available in select locations as "Original Captain Crunch".
In 1985, after Kellogg's had purchased the Quaker Oats Company, they sold the brand to General Mills. General Mills also owns Chex cereal brands.
