I guess it's to honor them, but it's really stupid.
When a student dies, the school will have an assembly the following Monday, and there'll be a "moment of silence" in his/her memory. Then the whole school will wear all black to school for one day.
Like what kind of policy is that?

If it were my school, we would have an assembly at least every time someone died.
The moment of silence is pretty cool, though.

I'm not a "buddy" with anyone, but if you mean by me knowing people who have died, then yeah.
One girl was hit by a car, another shot herself in her home (her dad is a cop), a guy got killed in a car crash, another guy fell off a cliff, one drowned, one shot himself...
You get the point.
