The button knows because your in a room with only you and someone else. If that other person wasnt there and you were in a room by yourself then you would die aswell.
You can try to argue about this all you want but we both know that in reality you would push the button to let the world die.

No, I wouldn't push the button. Because what if some guy got into the room right before I pushed the button? He could easily live while the rest of the world died. How does the button work?! There are multiple people that could have been in the room when I pressed it! It's not like I can change the whole world just so I don't get killed!

Yeah, but how do you know someone wasn't in the room when you pushed the button? How can you be sure no one was in the room with you? What if there was? Then you would die. So you have nothing to lose, if you don't press the button then the entire world dies, or you just press the button and save yourself.

Okay, okay. Let me ask you this: Say that all the world's governments got together and put up a new law that said everyone has to press the button within ten seconds after entering the room. And let's say I had five seconds left, but I knew there was a chance that some people might walk in right after I push the button. I wouldn't push the button! But I'm sure you'd be pushing it anyway, because you don't care about anyone else.

No, I wouldnt push the button. But I dont think the world would care if I did or didnt. If the world died because of my actions then they would blame themselves for not having more faith in god or something. Thats why they made the rule in the first place. To avoid being killed by the hands of someone who is greedy enough to kill the whole world for himself.

Im not selfish at all.
But its true that everyone has some amount of greed.
Everyone wants more power and more wealth than others around them.
I don't want more power or money than other people but thats the way our society was designed and thats the way it will stay.

You don't have to be greedy to push a button. All it takes is a little bit of selfishness. Pushing that button means you care about yourself more than you care about anything else. You may think it's fair to kill the whole world if only one person lives, but you also know there could be another person in the room who might accidentally die just because of your selfishness.

Exactly. Thats why we made the rule of pressing the button. So noone can just kill himself and let everyone else die. We also made the law so that everyones chance to live would be equal. No more being greedy. Its like how its unfair for people to have more money than others. Thats why they made tax laws.

Yeah, I guess it's true. It does make sense now. And the thing that really got me was how we could make the law so that everyone has an equal chance to live, even though it doesn't exist in the real world. We could do that with taxes too! That way the government could take away everyone's money so that nobody has any more than anyone else.
