what if you use a stick
does the ant just bite it or will the whole pile attack it

The ants are going to attack it but when they do they'll be all over it because of the scent of the wood and it could kill a lot of them so they would probably go away and let it die.

Also I've tried this with sticks before because I had a lot of trouble with ants in my yard last year. It didn't really work though because they would just get back to their business.
