Well it is actually 2 + 2 = 4.5.
So what makes you think that it would be 5?
The answer is the rounding system.
Rounding to the nearest tenth is done by adding 1/10 and rounding.
Adding 1/10 would make the numbers round to the nearest whole number. This is called rounding to the nearest whole number.
So why do we say 2+2=5? The answer lies in the rounding system.

It does.
But then the rounding system kicks in and turns it back to 2.

If you add 2 + 2, you get 4.
If you take 4 away from 6 you get 2.
2 + 2 = 4.
The rounding system changes 4 into 2.

No, I mean if you have two bricks, and you add them together, what do you get?

Well you would get four bricks.
If you have four bricks then you can add four more and end up with 8.
You could do this over and over again. The answer is always 8. It never changes.

But wait, if you round to the nearest whole number you get 3.
2 + 2 = 5?
No that can't be right.

If you have three bricks, then you would need one more to make 4.
But since there are only three, we just take out one of the bricks, so there are only 2 left.
