I think that the Mayans thought they were the only people on Earth and that if their calendar ended it would be the end of the world because of them not finding any other peoples.

I think this is true for the Mayans, but I'm pretty sure that the Mayan calandar ran out of numbers because they didn't know how to make more and then they died and then everyone else died and then noone was left to continue the calendar.
